Custom Cervelo Caledonia — Di2 Easton Custom Build

On This Page

Build Overview

This Cervelo Caledonia is the endurance road bike Steve has been riding for the past year. It started as a stock Caledonia build and has gone through a handful of thoughtful tweaks to match the type of riding he does around our area. The goal was comfort without losing speed, and this bike ended up surprising him more than expected.

The Caledonia’s geometry, tire clearance, and overall feel make it a very capable endurance bike that still looks and rides fast. Most endurance bikes feel a bit sluggish, but this one doesn’t. It’s an easy bike to put long miles on, and it still feels sporty enough to chase local segments.

This build keeps the stock Ultegra Di2 drivetrain but includes upgraded wheels, different cockpit choices, and a few fit-related changes that make it feel dialed for long road days.

Build Notes

I’ve been riding this Caledonia for about a year now, and it completely changed how I think about endurance bikes. We used to be a Trek dealer, so most of my endurance impressions were based on the Domane. Nice bikes, but they felt a bit sluggish and didn’t make me want to put big miles in. This Caledonia is the opposite.

The frame keeps the endurance geometry—higher stack, longer wheelbase, slightly slacker front end—but still looks and feels fast. With the rear wheel tucked up behind the seat tube and the narrow frame profile, you don’t immediately think “endurance bike” when you look at it. It handles long days really well but still lets you chase some of the local Strade-style segments.

The stock wheels were fine, but I swapped to the Easton EA90 SL set because the look and ride feel fit the bike better. I’m running 25 mm tires right now just to burn through some old shop stock, but ideally I’d be on 28s or 30s for this bike. The frame clears up to 34 mm, so there’s room to experiment depending on the ride.

The Ultegra Di2 drivetrain is fantastic. I prefer Shimano on the road—shifts are crisp, and the ergonomics of the Di2 hoods are some of my favorite. I also really like the little top button for controlling my Garmin. I changed the cassette to an 11–30 since it’s pretty flat here and the stock 11–34 felt unnecessary.

For fit, I swapped the seatpost to a zero-offset and moved to a flared Cervelo carbon bar. I’ve been riding a lot of gravel lately and like that slight flare. The bar tape is basic Shimano Pro cork, nothing fancy, but it works. I tip the hoods in a bit, and every time I set a bike up that way for a customer they like it too.

Overall, this Caledonia surprised me. It’s fast, comfortable, doesn’t carry any excess weight, and just looks good. If you’ve been skeptical of endurance bikes because they usually lack that sporty feel, this one is worth taking a look at.
