What Changed on the 2026

The most noticeable update is the new integrated one-piece bar. The previous generation used a two-piece V-shape system; the 2026 bar is a single molded piece with a cleaner aero profile and a subtle drop flare — not gravel-bar level, but noticeable and welcome after spending time on gravel bikes. Available in 36, 38, and 40cm. And it’s backwards compatible with the previous gen S5, which is excellent.

Frame updates: much deeper head tube, deeper aero fork blades with sharper leading edges, revised seatstay shaping, and a recessed seatpost clamp with a fitted rubber cap. The down tube shaping continues to echo the S5/P5 aero family. Tire clearance stays at 34mm.

Personal preference for this bike would be a 1x, 13-speed RED or Force XPLR setup — simple, fast, aero, tons of range. That’s what this build ships with and it makes sense.

Real time on the previous-generation Cervélo S5 — Ultegra Di2, Reserve 52/63 wheels, Vittoria Corsa Pro 28s. The bike that got Steve riding pavement more than gravel for six months. It’s that fast and that fun.

The Frame

The S5 is a rocket ship. It’s incredibly fast, extremely aerodynamic, and just a blast to ride. On flats with a tailwind you feel like Superman — and honestly it feels that way most of the time. The frame is wildly narrow when you look at it head-on. Cervélo’s aero shaping is real, not gimmicky. The whole bike slices the wind.

It climbs better than expected. Accelerates quickly and holds speed. Doesn’t feel sluggish or heavy in the front end the way some aero bikes can.

Wheels & Tires

Reserve 52 front / Reserve 63 rear with 25mm internal width. Vittoria Corsa Pro 28mm tires — the tan sidewalls look great. ETRTO now recommends 29mm for rims this wide; 28mm is likely the last time going this narrow. The trend is toward 30mm, especially with rough pavement. The Corsa Pros ride extremely well regardless.

Drivetrain

Stock Ultegra Di2 12-speed. The 11–30 cassette replaced the stock 11–34 — better gear spacing for flat Minnesota riding. LOOK pedals for compatibility with existing Garmin Vector setup. Shimano is the preference on the road — the Di2 hoods feel excellent, especially with them slightly toed in.

Sizing

54cm. At 5’10” with long inseam and long arms but shorter torso, this works well. Most of the 350mm seatpost is used. The drop from saddle to bars is already aggressive — spacers stayed in to preserve re-sale flexibility and keep the fit reasonable at 46 years old with declining flexibility. 54 is the right balance between aggressive fit and manageable geometry.

What It Did

Since getting this S5, pavement riding went up and gravel riding went down for about six months. That’s the effect this bike has — it makes road riding genuinely fun. When the Bianchi Oltre also arrived, the pavement bias continued. If you can find an S5 — current or previous generation — it’s an exceptional bike to have in the quiver.

The Bottom Line

Fast, aero, climbs better than expected, and genuinely fun to ride. Changed the shop’s appreciation for road cycling. Both generations are excellent — the 2026 refines an already-great platform with a better bar and cleaner aero.
