Niner RLT 9 RDO — Force XPLR 12-Speed Custom Gravel Build

Build Overview

This Niner RLT 9 RDO came in as a frame-up custom build for a rider looking for a gravel bike that would fit correctly and offer a clean, modern 12-speed electronic drivetrain. We compared the fit against a few other frames — including the Cervelo Áspero and Bianchi Arcadex — but the geometry on the RLT lined up perfectly without needing extreme stem or spacer choices.

With the current discounts on Niner RLT frames, we were able to build this bike for less than many OEM Force builds while still giving the rider exactly the components they wanted. The result is a super clean, versatile 1x Force XPLR setup with thoughtful upgrades in all the right places.

Build Notes

We’ve been doing a lot of frame-up Niner RLT builds this year, mostly because the frames fit a wide range of riders really well. The geometry is neutral, easy to work with, and doesn’t force you into awkward combinations of stems or spacers. In this case, the rider had tried out comparisons with the Áspero and Arcadex, but both had some compromises in stack or reach that didn’t feel quite right.

This build uses a full SRAM Force XPLR 1x drivetrain with the optional power-meter crank, which is one of the best values in the Force lineup. The cockpit uses the Easton EC90 AX carbon bars — one of our current shop favorites — and an EA70 stem for clean fit adjustability. The Wolf Tooth Supple bar tape has become our standard for tacky, comfortable wrap.

For wheels, we went with one of our go-to choices: the HED Emporia GA Pro alloy set. They’re local to the Twin Cities, ride incredibly well, and in many cases weigh as much or less than mid-level carbon wheels while staying under $1,000. We’ve put a lot of miles on these ourselves and have yet to need to re-true a set.

The tire choice — Vittoria Terreno Dry — continues to be one of the safest, best-rolling options for mixed Midwest gravel. Prologo saddles have also been gaining traction in the shop, so the rider will test a sample Dimension EVA before finalizing the fit.

This build ended up coming in under many OEM Force complete bikes, especially with the current price drops on RLT frames. Between smart wheel selection and focusing budget where it matters most, you can put together a really dialed build without overspending.

As usual, every custom bike gets test-ridden out on the path behind the shop so we can double-check brake bed-in, shifting, and anything that might come up before the rider takes it home.
