Tuscobia 80 Fat Bike Race | Wisconsin

2021/22

4th Male – 5th overall. Race was 80 miles, but Garmin dropped out and missed the last 8 miles. It was showing -20 temps and would not stay on… Don’t believe it was actually -20 though and more like -5 to -10 actual temps at the time and Garmin was just freezing up. Maybe some windchill getting to it on a few of the short downhills in that area. More notes to come and will continue brain dumping…

Fuel – Barely touched my hydration pack water and fed out of my insulated Salsa Purist bottles mixed with Skratch Superfuel. Went through 7 bottles of Superfuel mixed at 6 to 7 scoops per bottle. Only other fuel was a chocolate chip cookie and a Skratch Rice Krispie bar. Bottles were good for about 4 hours before freezing… Had 2 in frame pack with big hand warmers in bag and 2 more in one of the saddle bags with hand warmers on them. This worked really well.

Gear – Way over packed for the 80 and was carrying a lot of extra weight, but I had all the emergency gear… 0 degree sleeping bag, emergency bivy, down coat, heavy windshell, light windshell, extra layers, etc… I would dump some of it to do it again and clean up my packing. Ortlieb Gravel panniers were the bomb! Can go on front rack, but worked great as smaller panniers on the rear.

Got one GoPro video around the 20 mile mark, but battery was already frozen up and it shut down in 30s and went dead.

Keep adding notes as they come to mind… Lots of brain dumping to do on gear.
