The Tioga race is part of the Minnesota Mountain Bike Series and is held at the Tioga trail system near Barnum, Minnesota — a DNR trail network with a good mix of climbs and flow sections that makes for an interesting XC race course. It’s a smaller venue than Cuyuna but a solid race, and it tends to draw a tight competitive field. The whole family has raced the series here multiple times. mnmtb.org

Kyle is in the zone! He lost his shifting 4 minutes into the race (dead battery) and was stuck in his 16 tooth cog with a 34t chainring and still put over 2 minutes into me. I don’t know how he cranked through some of those uphill switchbacks. I bet he’ll double check his battery next time… 🙂
Reid’s first lap time was just as fast as Kyle and mine. If he was racing elite, he would have came through the first lap with us and his 2nd and 3rd lap were faster than mine as well. If he could have held that pace for another lap, he would have beat me in elite.
Lynn’s first lap was faster than last year’s single lap, but pulled out the 2nd lap to take care of an injured rider.
Hydration
USWE pack w/ 2L bladder and 2 servings of the heavy carb SIS powder. Underdiluted the mix and then topped off bladder with ice cubes. Had cold mix for at least the first half of race. Cold water hand ups on a few laps.

Reid got sandwich coming out of the start gates, taking a spill and twisting up his bars, but he got back on and took off chasing. He headed up the first climb gapped off the back, but caught back on and started passing up the opening climb. His time up that first climb was 6 seconds faster than my best from last year’s Elite race. He had to pull off though shortly after to fix an issue with his shifter. Got it fixed enough to go and then back to racing.
Kyle is getting real strong on climbs and made it up the opening climb 13 seconds faster than my best. He took a spill in a turn halfway through the first lap, losing a few spots, but then pulled a couple of them back shortly after and another in the last lap.
Lynn took off faster than normal on the opening climb. Looked strong in 7th or 8th overall up the climb. Asthma kicked in at the top and dropped a handful of overall places, but then hung in there for a second in her age group.
