About This Race
USA Cycling Gravel Nationals is the national championship for gravel racing. The junior race is 74 miles. In 2025 it was held in La Crescent, Minnesota — five big climbs, a lot of up and down, very little flat. Kyle and Reid raced it as their first ever USAC race. La Crescent is scheduled to host again in 2026 as well. usacycling.org

2025 Race Notes
Course was five major climbs in La Crescent with bombing descents in between and very little flat. You go up, you come down, you do it again. First two climbs in the first 15-20 miles, then a flatter section, then three more. The lead group blew apart on the second climb.
About 30 minutes before the start we found a staple in Reid’s tire. Pulled it, got it to seal, but the valve plugged up in the process. Popped the bead, cleaned the valve, reseated it, and sent it. That put them both to the back of the start gate — basically last in line. Kyle stood around waiting to see if Reid needed more help, which is the kind of thing that doesn’t show up in the results but matters.
They were staged with 17-18 in front of the 15-16 group, so Kyle and Reid were in separate races but rolled out together in a combined neutral start. Kyle saw Reid at mile 6 on the first climb before things split up. They didn’t see each other again until around mile 40 — when Kyle went over the handlebars in a muddy two-track section and Reid, right behind him, went down too. Reid landed on Kyle. Kyle was cramped up on the ground and couldn’t get up for a bit. Both finished with mud packed in their shifters and bars bent over, just sorted it and kept going.
From there Kyle was about five minutes back from Reid and couldn’t close it. Reid picked off places in the last five miles as people started to fade. Kyle rode consistent through to the finish. Both guys were happy with it. First USAC race, good field, well-run event.
