Redhead Mountain Bike Race | MN MTB Series

We really like the Redhead mountain bike race course. The race loop has some tough climbs, fast descents and some techy singletrack. The Redhead MTB Park venue itself is also really good for a race with plenty of parking and a nice infield area.

Redhead mountain bike race

It looked like Kyle was going to beat me this time. He was out in front of me till about halfway thru the 3rd lap. We exchanged places midway thru the first lap, but then he overtook me again on the next climb. Super fun racing with him and watching him mix it up and throw down. I feel super fortunate to be able to ride with him. He’s building some endurance, figuring out how to fuel, pace and manage his race efforts. He pulls away from me on the climbs and he’ll be gone out in front of me as soon as he dials in the rest of it.

An interesting stat is that my avg and normalized power was up 20 to 30 watts over last year and I was also 9 minutes faster this year over last on the same course, but the downside is that I finished 2 places worse than last year. The first race of the year (Gamehaven) was a similar situation as well. My power was up 20 to 30 watts and I didn’t finish any better. I guess the competition is getting faster as well!

Reid and Lynn both had good rides also. Lynn’s first lap was 4 minutes faster than her single lap last year in sport class and her second lap was within a minute of it. She’s getting faster too! Reid is having to throttle himself back a bit as he’s been fighting some skin issues this past year that the sun and high intensity efforts light up badly. He wasn’t even going to race at the beginning of this year, but has hit every race, managing his ride well, hanging in there and building up his experience.

2022 Race Notes

This was our first time at Redhead Mountain Bike Park and just Lynn and the boys raced. I (Steve) sat out from the XC races in 2022 as Lynn and the boys all moved up from classes and just wanted to make sure they were all set and taken care of for their races. Both boys had been racing the Kid’s race the previous years, but Kyle had moved up to Comp with the adults and Reid up to Sport with the adults. Redhead was their first time racing the adult classes, so it was a new experience for them.
