Custom Bike Builds at Maklin Bike Shop
More and more of our bike sales have shifted from stock OEM builds to custom builds that better match how people actually ride. Some are simple part swaps. Others are full frame-up projects with hand-picked components and custom wheel builds.
The best way to see what we do is to look through some of the custom bikes we’ve already built.

Why Riders Choose Custom Builds with Maklin
Stock builds work for a lot of people. But if you’re picky about how your bike rides, how it’s set up, or where you want to invest your budget, a custom build gives you way more control.
Built Around Your Riding
We look at where and how you ride—long gravel days, XC racing, trail, or all-road—and choose parts that match what you actually do.
Practical Setup Help
We don’t always go super deep on a full fit session, but we do help with sizing, bar and stem choice, saddle selection, and basic position checks.
Smart Budget Decisions
Sometimes the best move is upgrading a stock bike with wheels or a drivetrain change instead of going full frame-up. We’ll be honest about what makes the biggest difference.
Brands We Work With
We’ve done a ton of Niner gravel and MTB builds, plus projects with Bianchi, Jamis, Salsa, TIME, Trek, and modern upgrades on classic and vintage frames.
Types of Custom Builds We Do
Gravel
Niner RLT, Bianchi Arcadex, TIME ADHX 45 and more. From value-minded builds using existing parts to high-end electronic drivetrains and hand-built wheelsets.
Mountain
XC and downcountry and trail bike setups using platforms like the Niner AIR, RKT, JET, RIP, Salsa Spearfish, Jamis Portal & more.
Road
Road and all-road builds and upgrades, including modern drivetrains on existing frames and wheel/cockpit changes to better match how you ride.
Vintage Refreshes
Modernizing bikes people already love—like updating a classic road frame to 11-speed, or converting an XC or hardtail MTB into a drop-bar gravel setup.
How the Custom Build Process Works
-
Initial conversation — What you’re riding now, what you like or don’t like, and your budget.
-
Frame & platform selection — Pick a frame that makes sense for the way you actually ride.
-
Parts & build plan — Drivetrain, wheels, tires, cockpit and details, or a smart upgrade path from a stock bike.
-
Build & setup — We assemble the bike, route cables/hoses, set up brakes and shifting, and dial in suspension where needed.
-
Position check & follow-up — Basic fit check and follow-up if anything feels off after a few rides.
Custom Build FAQ
How long does a custom build take?
It depends on parts availability and how involved the build is, but most projects fall somewhere between a few days and a couple of weeks once everything is in the shop.
Can I bring my own frame or parts?
In many cases, yes. We’re happy to look at what you’ve got and help you decide what makes sense to use and what might be better to replace.
Do you ship custom builds?
Yes. As long as you are comfortable with some minor setup upon delivery before riding.
Do I have to go full custom?
Not at all. Sometimes a stock bike plus the right wheelset, cockpit changes, or drivetrain swap is all you need. We’ll be honest if a full custom build isn’t the best move.
